How to Calculate Your Real Hourly Pay
Turn annual salary into a more honest hourly number by accounting for workdays, overtime, and unpaid time.
Annual salary is useful, but it can hide how expensive a job is in time. Two roles with the same salary can have very different value if one requires long days, weekend work, or constant availability.
Convert annual salary into daily pay
Start by estimating your real working days. Remove paid leave, public holidays, and other paid time away from work. Then divide annual salary by that number.
Add the unpaid hours
The workday is not only scheduled office time. Include recurring overtime, late-night messages, weekend tasks, and required preparation when they are part of the job.
Compare jobs by effective time cost
Once you divide pay by the real hours consumed, the better offer may not be the role with the higher salary. A lower salary with healthier hours can sometimes produce better real value.
